Lack of Investment
As the last Cadbury family member stepped down from the Board in 2000 a new group of members took over - a mixture of British and American millionaires.
Since then there has been a bad track record by the Cadbury Board. There has been fraud in Nigeria costing the company mega millions of pounds while bad financial investments in Russia and China led to more great losses.
But the worst of all was the salmonella outbreak here in Great Britain in 2006 which endangered the health of the British consumer. More than a million bars of chocolate were recalled in the biggest public health alerts of all time.
The Cadbury Board pleaded guilty to nine charges relating to breaches of food and safety regulations.
Although the potentially fatal organism was identified by Cadbury in January 2006 it was not reported until June of that year. Cadburys had ignored literature about the issue and put profits before British health. With 95% of all chocolate produced at Keynsham this was totally unacceptable.
This is how the situation occurred:-
There had been no long term investment in the Cadbury refinery plant at Marlbrook where the salmonella outbreak occurred. Much machinery and equipment had become increasingly ‘outdated' and in desperate need of repair. But, the Board chose profits over British health.
Meanwhile the chocolate making facility at Keynsham not only met the high demands of itself, but was so productive that it also fed Bournville and factories in France. The Cadbury Board, fearful that the consequences of their lack of investment would repeat itself at the Keynsham factory, closed its highly productive and hugely profitable chocolate making rather than invest.
On 3rd October 2008 came the devastating news that the Cadbury factory in Keynsham was to close with production moving to Poland. The biggest blow yet for home produced historic chocolate making.
95% of all chocolate made at Keynsham is consumed by you, the great British public.
You can help to keep 280 years of chocolate making at KEYNSHAM in GREAT BRITAIN by signing the petition.
