Letter To Boris Johnson RE British Olympic
LETTER TO BORIS JOHNSON RE BRITISH OLYMPIC30th October 2008 -- -- Cadbury sponsorship for London Olympics 2012
Dear Boris Johnson,
As excitement rises for our British Olympics in 2012 the need for sponsorship is obviously being sort. In the knowledge that you want investors from Britain and from around the world, to help regenerate the east London area where the games will take place, it is only fair that the attention of a certain sponsor be brought to your notice.
It has been announced by Cadburys that they will be sponsoring our British Olympics 2012. This sounds a brilliant idea, a totally British iconic company dating back over 280 years (previously known as Fry's of Bristol) where 95% of all it produces at its Somerdale site in Bristol is consumed solely by the great British public.
Yes, the BUT......
On October 3rd 2007 Cadburys announced the closure of its productive and profitable chocolate factory known as Somerdale in Bristol, with all production to be relocated 1,200 miles away to Poland by 2010 in a global attempt to squeeze out any more profits. Cadburys have become hell bent on a ‘race to the bottom' for the cheapest ingredients and exploitation of foreign labour. All relocated chocolate produced in Poland will need to be returned to the Motherland 1,200 miles per journey for the consumption of the British public and ‘visitors'.
Since the announcement, oil prices have rocketed and currency exchange rates have soared along with inflation.
However, two things have stayed constant, the loyalty of the Cadbury employees and the damage that will be caused purely through unnecessary transportation - an additional 2,847,000 kg of CO2 and 777,450 kg of carbon per year.
In Great Britain in 2006 Cadburys endangered the health of the British consumer. More than a million bars of chocolate were recalled in the biggest public health alerts of all time. The Cadbury Board pleaded guilty to nine charges relating to breaches of food and safety regulations.
All caused through total lack of investment.
The Cadbury Directors are still showing themselves to be less than competent, especially when it comes to producing confectionary in certain countries other than Britain.
Recently Cadburys have had to withdraw 11 of their products at the Beijing factory, China after Dairy Milk was found to contain melamine, the chemical in the toxic baby milk scandal.
It is nationally embarrassing to watch this iconic British industry hell bent in the ‘race to the bottom' and the disrespect shown for consumers' health.
Through the eyes of the world, the immense irreparable damage through emissions and the plundering of resources in transportation alone will prove a most negative act as Britain fronts up to other countries unwilling to lower their carbon emissions and unnecessary use of precious resources - with Poland found to be one of the worst culprits recently.
Britain wants to be seen world wide as leaders in this area and knows that in the years running up to the London Olympics, and during them, the expectations of Great Britain will be massive. Taking into account the focal point being Great Britain, there will be plenty of countries, and people, who would be more than delighted in catching Great Britain using, ‘double standards' in whatever form it may show itself.
Consumers' health is paramount, whether they are the British public, the wonderful athletes or our valued visitors while they are in Great Britain.
It is such a great honour for Great Britain to be chosen to stage the 2012 Olympics; people have worked tirelessly to achieve this. There is a mega amount of work now to be done to ensure Great Britain uses all its positive influence, in full view, to make the 2012 games the proudest games ever, in all ways.
Money talks, but it is not always speaking a language we need to hear.
I hope this letter has brought to your attention some concerning issues and I look forward to your response,
Yours most sincerely,
